The VLESS protocol: what it is and why it fits Russia better

VLESS in plain language: how the encryption works, how the protocol differs from WireGuard and OpenVPN, and why a connection on it stays stable on Russian networks.
VLESS is a modern protocol for a protected connection. Traffic inside it is encrypted with standard TLS, the same protection used by bank sites and mail. That is why VLESS works reliably at home, in the office, and on public Wi-Fi.
What VLESS is
VLESS appeared in 2020 in the Xray project as a lighter replacement for the VMess protocol. It has no cryptography of its own built from scratch: TLS 1.3 protects the data, a proven standard that every modern device supports.
The protocol itself only describes how the client and the server agree on a connection. That keeps it light: less overhead, less load on the processor and on the phone’s battery.
How it protects data
- The whole connection is encrypted. The Wi-Fi owner, the ISP, or someone else on a public network sees only that you connected to a server, not the sites and not the contents.
- The server is checked. The client verifies the server certificate, so a server cannot be swapped in the middle without being noticed.
- Modern ciphers. TLS 1.3 uses algorithms that are the current standard for banks and large cloud services.
Why the connection stays stable
VLESS traffic is built the same way as an ordinary HTTPS connection to a website. Corporate networks, hotel Wi-Fi, and mobile operators let that traffic through without special settings, so the connection drops less often when you move between networks and on networks with strict rules.
VLESS, WireGuard, and OpenVPN
| Protocol | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| VLESS | Light, standard TLS, stable on different networks | Needs a client with Xray support, such as Happ |
| WireGuard | Very fast, simple | Uses UDP, which is often closed on corporate and guest networks |
| OpenVPN | Mature, available almost everywhere | Heavier, and it uses noticeably more battery |
For everyday work and travel, stability on any network matters most, so CHEBA VPN uses VLESS.
Where this helps
- working from a café, a coworking space, or a hotel on shared Wi-Fi;
- calls and cloud work tools that need an even connection;
- trips, when the phone keeps switching between other people’s networks.

How to connect
You do not configure the protocol by hand: it is already built into the subscription link from your account. Step-by-step guides: Android, iPhone, Windows.
The point
VLESS is a light protocol with standard TLS encryption. It protects traffic and keeps the connection stable on home, work, and public networks.
